Riding the Stark Varg: A Year On

April 2026 · 7 min read

A year ago the Stark Varg was the most discussed bike in electric motocross. It promised 80 HP, full MX geometry, and a single-charge enduro window. After 40 hours of trail and track time across six different riders, here's the honest assessment.

What works
The motor is a genuine revelation. Stark built their own axial-flux unit and it shows — the power curve is smooth where most electric MX bikes are snatchy, and the regen braking can be tuned via app in 5-minute increments from zero to very aggressive. Riders coming from petrol bikes adapt within three sessions.

Suspension is spec'd for real racing: KYB 48 mm forks, linkage-actuated rear. Both are rebuildable and take standard MX valving. This matters because the Varg is heavy at 112 kg — proper damping compensates for what weight can't fix.

The app (iOS/Android) is the best in class. Ride modes, power curves, regen, and even a live battery health readout with cell-level detail. Updates arrive OTA and the firmware team is responsive.

What didn't hold up
The battery connector on early production units (Build 22.1 and earlier) sees fretting corrosion in muddy conditions. Stark replaced affected connectors under warranty without argument, but the root cause — insufficient sealing on the main discharge port — should have been caught in testing.

Range anxiety is real in enduro. The quoted 6-hour ride time assumes moderate terrain and 15°C ambient. Cold weather (sub-5°C) drops usable capacity by 12–18%. Plan accordingly or carry a fast charger.

Verdict after a year
The Varg is the most complete electric MX bike built to date. It is not cheap (€12,900) and it demands a rider who knows what they want from suspension setup. In return it delivers a riding experience that erases the gap between electric and petrol — not by pretending the gap doesn't exist, but by making it irrelevant.
